English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Thornton Township High School District 205 is designed to support multilingual learners in developing the language skills needed to succeed academically, socially, and personally. The program provides instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also helping students build confidence and thrive in all subject areas.

ESL students receive tailored instruction that emphasizes:

  • Language Development – Building vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills for both everyday use and academic success.

  • Cultural Integration – Helping students adjust to a new learning environment while celebrating their diverse backgrounds.

  • Academic Support – Assisting students with coursework in core subjects so they can achieve at the same high standards as their peers.

  • College and Career Readiness – Preparing students with the language and study skills needed for postsecondary education and future employment.
